Contactless ticketing now live at London Southend Airport rail station

Passengers travelling on the Greater Anglia network can now benefit from simpler, faster journeys as contactless ticketing is introduced at 20 additional stations across the network.

As of yesterday, Sunday 8 March, customers travelling between London Liverpool Street and stations across Essex and Hertfordshire can simply tap in and tap out using a contactless bank card, smartphone or smart device.

The extension now makes journeys easier for customers travelling on key commuter and airport routes into and out of London, including the direct 52-minute route between London Liverpool Street and London Southend Airport.

Caroline Fitzgerald, London Southend Airport Commercial Director, said: “Rail connectivity is a key part of our offer as an easy, speedy, friendly major London airport, and this development makes choosing London Southend an obvious decision for customers looking for a stress-free journey from door to departure gate

“For passengers travelling from East London and further afield, contactless payment removes the need to queue for paper tickets – they can simply tap in and go.”

Stations where contactless ticketing is now available include:

  • Billericay
  • Beaulieu Park
  • Bishop’s Stortford
  • Chelmsford
  • Harlow Mill
  • Harlow Town
  • Hatfield Peverel
  • Hockley
  • Ingatestone
  • Prittlewell
  • Rayleigh
  • Rochford
  • Roydon
  • Sawbridgeworth
  • Stansted Airport
  • Southend Victoria
  • Stansted Mountfitchet
  • Wickford
  • Witham
  • Southend Airport

Contactless ticketing allows passengers to pay for individual journeys, combining peak and off-peak fares where appropriate, with fares automatically calculated based on where and when they travel. Daily and weekly caps apply on journeys into and within London, helping customers pay the best value fare for their journeys.

The introduction of contactless ticketing at these stations forms part of a wider programme to simplify fares and ticketing across the rail industry, delivered in partnership with the Department for Transport and Transport for London.

Passengers are encouraged to check that contactless is available at both their departure and destination stations before travelling and to ensure they touch in and out correctly at the start and end of each journey.
