This October half term

Escape to family-friendly Malta

Malta

When the UK October half-term rolls around, the skies turn grey, the rain sets in, and you end up frantically searching “indoor activities near me” just to keep the kids occupied. So why not swap all that for bright blue seas and sunny shorelines?

This autumn, you can fly direct from London Southend Airport to Malta – where average October temperatures hover around 24°C, and where there’s more than enough adventure to keep the whole family entertained.

Whether you’re a history buff, a thrill-seeker, or just someone in need of a warm-weather escape, Malta delivers the goods.

And if you can’t make October half-term? Don’t worry! easyJet flights to Malta will continue every Wednesday and Sunday as just one of London Southend’s Airport’s winter destinations, so you can plan a getaway whenever it suits you best.

Here’s a taste of what’s waiting for you…

Explore Valletta

Malta’s capital isn’t just pretty – it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site wrapped in golden stone and Mediterranean sunshine. Wander through the city’s fortified walls, duck into baroque churches, and discover the Grand Harbour, one of the most stunning natural harbours in Europe. Kids will love exploring the narrow streets that feel straight out of a film set (they sometimes are!), while parents can soak up the city’s history and culture at every turn.

Hike and cycle the island

You don’t need to look far for a good trail in Malta. Families can take gentle walks along the coast, discover hidden valleys inland, or pick up bikes and explore on two wheels. One of the most popular routes runs along the Dingli Cliffs, offering jaw-dropping views out over the sea. Pack a picnic and you’ve got the perfect half-term day out!

Make a splash with water sports

The crystal-clear waters around Malta are made for adventure. Rent kayaks and paddle through quiet coves, or hop on a paddle board to explore the bays at your own pace. For older kids and teens, jet skiing is a must-try. And with the water still warm in October, you won’t need to worry about wetsuits. For younger children, there are a range of waterparks on the island, including in Buġibba and Naxxar.

Horse riding in Golden Bay

Golden Bay is one of Malta’s most beautiful beaches, framed by dramatic cliffs and wide sandy shores. But here’s something a little different – try exploring it on horseback. Guided rides take you along the bay and up into the hills above, where the views are nothing short of spectacular. It’s a half-term activity your family will be talking about long after you’re home.

Easy island-hopping

Got a bit more time? Malta’s smaller sister island, Gozo, is just a short ferry ride away. It’s quieter, greener, and home to some of the best diving spots in the Mediterranean. Even if you don’t head out to sea, you’ll find rural Maltese villages, winding country lanes, and breathtaking coastlines around every turn.

If you want to hop further afield, you can also plan a day out to Sicily by ferry, where you can soak up Italian culture, food and coastal charm. There are guided options available to book, or you can rent a car and explore at your own pace.

Why Malta this half-term?

  • Malta offers sunshine when the UK doesn’t, with average October temperatures of 24°C compared to just 14°C at home.
  • It’s only around a three-hour direct flight from London Southend, making it an easy way to enjoy a big adventure without the long travel time.
  • The island has something for everyone, from historic cities and golden beaches to outdoor adventures and rich culture.

So, instead of spending October half-term trying to keep the kids entertained indoors, head to London Southend Airport, hop on an easyJet flight, and let Malta take care of the rest.
