Travel tips

Nothing puts the brakes on an upcoming holiday quite like passport panic – and with some passport rules changing this spring, now’s the best time to check your travel documents are in order.

As of April 2025, passport application fees have gone up, meaning travellers will pay more, whether they’re renewing their passport or applying for one for the first time. That’s not all. For those heading to Europe, stricter post-Brexit rules mean some passports that look valid might not meet entry requirements.

Here’s our quick guide to the new costs and essential checks before you fly from London Southend Airport.

Passport fees have just gone up

As of the 10th of April, 2025, the UK Government has increased the cost of getting a new passport. Not only that, but there are three ways you can apply for your passport – online (the cheapest option), by post, or via the government’s premium one-day service

Whether you’re renewing or applying for the first time, here’s what you’ll now pay:

Check your passport dates carefully

Alongside the fee hike, another reminder from travel experts: if you’re heading to Europe, your passport might not be as valid as you think.

ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents) is urging UK travellers to double-check their documents. Even if your passport looks in date, it might not meet Schengen zone entry requirements, which apply to countries like Spain, France, Italy, and many others served by London Southend Airport.

Your passport needs to be:

  • Issued within the last 10 years on the day you enter the country.
  • Valid for at least three months beyond the date you leave.
  • That means both the issue and expiry dates matter – especially if your passport is nearing the 10-year mark.

ABTA’s 4-step passport check list

  1. Visit the FCDO website for your destination’s passport rules.
  2. Check the date of issue – most countries won’t accept passports issued over 10 years ago.
  3. Check the expiry date – you’ll need at least three months’ validity after your return.
  4. Apply online via Gov.UK for the cheapest renewal option.

Before heading off from London Southend Airport, double-check your passport – and if you’re not sure, speak to a travel agent or ABTA member for advice. A few minutes of admin now could save you a last-minute dash – even a missed holiday!
