Everything You Need to Know Before a Ski Trip to Grenoble

Planning, Packing, and Ski Passes

Grenoble, France

If your perfect holiday involves snow-covered mountains, fresh air and the smell of melted cheese on the air, a ski trip to the French Alps could be just the ticket.

But skiing isn’t like a beach break. It’s fun, exhilarating, unforgettable… but it also takes a bit more planning. There’s the gear. The passes. The insurance. Doing a little admin now means a much smoother run once you’re there.

From 14 December 2025, you can fly direct from London Southend to Grenoble with easyJet every Sunday – putting you in prime position for a week in the French Alps. But before you hit the slopes, here’s everything you need to know to make it all go smoothly.

What do I need to plan before I go skiing?

Getting to your resort

First, your flights – easyJet has you covered. Then, you’ll need to sort your transfer from the airport to your resort. There are regular coaches from Grenoble Airport to most of the resorts nearby, and they’re usually cheaper if you book early (expect to pay around £23–£27 one way). You can hire a car too, but remember: driving in the mountains isn’t easy, especially in the winter. Some things are better left to the experts.

Ski lift passes

Next up, your ski lift passes. No matter which resort you go to, these are your ticket to the slopes – they give you access to the ski lifts and gondolas that take you up the mountain. Most resorts let you book these online before you travel, which often works out cheaper and definitely saves you queuing when you get there.

Winter sports cover

Last but certainly not least, you’ll need insurance. You’ll need winter sports cover. If you’re planning to ski off-piste or do any freestyle terrain park bits, check your policy carefully – this isn’t always covered.

Do I need to bring my own skis?

Nope! Every resort around Grenoble has rental shops, and you can get everything you need on arrival – skis, boots, poles, helmets, even snowboards. Prices vary slightly between resorts, but you can expect to pay around €20–€30 a day for a full ski setup.

If you’re booking for more than a few days, it often works out cheaper overall than booking each day. Some resorts let you pre-book your ski rental online, which is definitely worth doing in peak season. Most places will also offer kids’ equipment, snowshoes, sledges – even toboggans, if that’s more your speed.

Which ski resort should I go to from Grenoble?

You’ve got options. Lots of them.

Chamrousse

Chamrousse is one of the closest resorts to Grenoble – about 45 minutes from the airport – and it’s great for beginners and families.

The runs are wide, the lifts are easy to use, and there’s a relaxed atmosphere that’s perfect if you’re just getting started. Day passes cost around €42.50, and if you’re not an early riser, there’s night skiing too – usually on Thursdays and Saturdays, with the lifts open until 8pm.

Les 7 Laux

If you want a bit more variety but still good value, Les 7 Laux is a solid choice.

It’s about 90 minutes from the airport and has 120km of slopes, spread across three different areas. Prices start at €41 for a full day, and you can often get a discount if you book for weekdays in advance. There’s a good mix of runs, from beginner to expert, so it’s a strong all-rounder – especially if you’re in a group with different experience levels.

Les Deux Alpes & Alpe d’Huez

And then there are the big ones. Les Deux Alpes and Alpe d’Huez are world-class resorts, with huge ski areas and high-altitude slopes.

Expect longer transfers – closer to two hours – and higher prices. Day passes cost around €62–€64, but you’re getting a lot of mountain for your money. These resorts are best if you’ve been skiing a few times before and want to go further, higher and faster.

Col d’Ornon & Le Sappey-en-Chartreuse

There are also smaller, quieter resorts like Col d’Ornon and Le Sappey-en-Chartreuse.

The lift passes are cheaper (some as low as €12), and they’re ideal if you want a gentler experience without the crowds. These tend to be popular with local families, so expect fewer facilities, but a more laid-back vibe.

When’s the best time to go skiing near Grenoble?

easyJet flies direct from London Southend to Grenoble every Sunday from December to March, so your window lines up perfectly with ski season.

  • December and January are great if you’re after festive charm and quieter slopes – especially in the run-up to Christmas. Snow coverage is usually good, and it’s a lovely time to ease into the season.
  • February is peak time, with the best snow and the busiest resorts. It’s ideal if you want that classic ski holiday buzz, but prices and crowds will be higher – especially during half-term.
  • March brings longer days and a more relaxed vibe. The snow can be a little softer by the afternoon, but many resorts offer discounted passes and you’ll often get the slopes to yourself.

What else do I need to know?

A few extra bits of info that are good to have in your back pocket.

Pack for the winter weather

You’ll need proper winter gear: waterproof jacket and trousers, gloves, thermal layers, a hat, and goggles or sunglasses. Even if it’s sunny, it can be freezing at the top of the mountain – and no one enjoys skiing with frost-bitten fingers.

Ski schools are available for beginners

Most resorts near Grenoble also have ski schools, so if you’re just starting out or want to improve your technique, lessons are easy to arrange. English-speaking instructors are the norm, and you can usually book group or private sessions online before you travel.

Don’t forget, some of the best parts of a ski trip happen off the slopes! Think hot chocolate by the fire, raclette dinners, and that feeling when you take your boots off after a long day on the mountain. You’ve earned it!
