London Southend Airport is flying to Pisa! If you love quaint streets, ancient architecture, and the smell of freshly brewed espresso, you’re in luck. But just because we’ve added another famous locale to our growing list of destinations, that doesn’t mean you have to stay within the city limits.
True, Pisa may have one of the world’s most iconic landmarks, but beyond the leaning tower you’ll find colourful coastal villages, awe-inspiring medieval towns, renaissance masterpieces and yes, plenty of fantastic spots to tuck into some Tuscan cuisine.
So that’s why we’ve done the leg work for you and put together a list of nearby day trips you can take from Pisa.
Whether you’re looking to lie back and take in some sun on the beach, dive into a bit of history, or explore some of the best local food and wines the region has to offer, we’ve got you covered with the 10 best day trips Tuscany has to offer.
Vamos!
Cinque Terre
Cinque Terre is a dazzling stretch of coastline that feels like you’re stepping right into a postcard. Along the coast you’ll find five villages: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore – each boasting its own unique charm.
Hike along the scenic coastal trails that connect these idyllic hamlets and take in breathtaking views of the sea and the local vineyards. The entire route will take about six hours, but you can also spread the journey out across a few days, stopping at and enjoying the towns along the way (we recommend this option if you want to explore each location, sip on an Aperol spritz and go for a dip in the crisp blue sea).
But if you’ve left your walking boots at home (by accident, no doubt), just hop on a ferry and soak in the stunning landscape from the water, or take a quick train between the towns. You won’t find many places more picturesque so close to the city.
Florence
Florence is the birthplace of the Renaissance, and remains a true treasure trove of art and culture.
Take in the works of the great masters when you wander through the Uffizi Gallery, where you can marvel at works by the likes of Botticelli and Leonardo da Vinci.
Stroll down the banks of the Arno River, cross the iconic Ponte Vecchio and visit the stunning Duomo that dominates the skyline. Florence offers vibrant streetlife, renaissance masterpieces and delicious gelato. Molto bene.
Siena
Siena is more than just a city, it’s a living medieval masterpiece that transports you backwards through time.
The historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is known for its narrow winding streets and beautiful architecture.
Don’t miss the stunning Piazza del Campo, famous for its Palio horse race and the intricate marble facade and frescoes of the Siena Cathedral. Keep an eye out for local shops selling traditional sweets like panforte.
If you’re looking for a slice of the past, Seina is the place to go.
Lucca
Just a very short trip from Pisa, Lucca is a lovely town known for its well-preserved Renaissance walls.
You can take a leisurely bike ride around the town or head up to the ramparts for lovely views of the city.
Within Lucca’s famous walls, you’ll find charming piazzas, quaint shops and lovely cafés – perfect for enjoying an espresso or a slice of torta lucchese.
Viareggio
Looking for that perfect beach day? Viareggio is the place to go – with sandy shores and a vibrant promenade lined with shops and restaurants.
Known for its Liberty style architecture, the town has a particularly lively atmosphere, especially during the summer months.
Spend your time sunbathing, swimming in the clear waters, or indulging in fresh seafood at one of the many beachfront restaurants. The sunset views are simply magical.
Pietrasanta
Known as the City of Artists, Pietrasanta has been a hub for sculptors and painters for centuries. Mosy through streets dotted with art galleries showcasing local talent.
The town is famous for its alabaster craftsmanship, and you can visit studios where artisans create beautiful works. Don’t miss the chance to relax in the lively piazza, enjoy a drink or two and soak up the artistic vibe.
Castellina in Chianti
Looking for an opportunity to indulge your inner wine enthusiast? Castellina in Chianti is the destination for you; pronounced *kee-an-tee.
In the heart of the Chianti wine region, this village offers stunning views of rolling vineyards and olive groves. Spend a day touring local wineries, sampling exquisite Chianti wine (the name makes more sense now, right?) and enjoying delicious Tuscan cuisine in the picturesque surroundings.
San Gimignano
Famed for its medieval towers, San Gimignano is a picture-perfect town that looks like it’s straight out of a fairy tale.
Take in the cobbled streets, visit local shops selling saffron and artisan products and look out over the town from the hilltop. While you’re there, don’t miss one of the town’s many gelato shops – San Gimignano is known for having some of the best in Italy, so treat yourself while exploring.
Volterra
Volterra offers a unique blend of ancient Etruscan heritage and medieval architecture.
Explore the well-preserved Roman Theatre, the Palazzo dei Priori and the enchanting narrow streets. Like Pietrasanta, Volterra is also known for its alabaster, so don’t miss the chance to shop for unique handcrafted souvenirs.
The town’s dramatic hilltop setting provides stunning panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
Barga
Head up into the Apuan Alps to Barga, a hidden gem known for its stunning scenery and artistic heritage.
Sample local delicacies like torta di Barga, a delicious cake made with chestnut flour, and enjoy the beautiful views of the surrounding mountains.
